The Susan Boyle Story – What Can Marketers Learn From It?

by Ket-Sang Tai

Not many people don’t know who Susan Boyle is. Although she didn’t win the British Got Talent show despite being favourite, her story is still an amazing one. There are a few things we as marketers can learn from her story.

1. If You Are Good, Your Time Will Come

Marketing can be frustrating sometime. Sometimes you know you have the best product which can benefit a lot of people and despite all the effort you put in, you are not getting results. Instead of getting frustrated and giving up, you should keep improving yourself, your product and your marketing skill. Your Susan Boyle moment will come.

2. People Like People And Their Story

There is no doubt Susan Boyle is a great singer, but there are a lot of singers who are  better than her and are not getting the same exposure. It is not just her singing that sells, it is her story of coming from an ordinary background and doing something totally unexpected of her. People like her story and like her as a person. If you are marketing yourself online, you need to be genuine and act like a person. You need to share your story and be who you are.

3. The Power of Social Media

She gets a lot of television and radio coverage. However, in my opinion, it is the viral effect of social media which made her famous faster in a shorter time frame. She is everywhere on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. We know that social media and online videos are powerful and she just proved it.

4. Take It Easy And Have a Long Term View

A lot of beginners in marketing are not patient enough. They want to do it quick and make money as soon as they can. They then end up pushing too hard and get burned out. It is important to take it easy as online marketing is a marathon and not a 100m sprint. (if you don’t know, Susan Boyle was taken to clinic with exhaustion after the final)

I thank her for the lessons we learned and I wish her quick recovery and have great years ahead.

To Your Success,

  • Great Article.I really enjoyed it.

I was watching Susan Boyle on YouTube [even though I don’t watch Britain Got Talent show-Susan Boyle was a familier name because of social media platform like YouTube.

Even a celebrity singer was twitting about her-that came as Headline.

Susan Boyle GOT it –doesn’t matter that she’s lost the competition–She is now an internationally recongnised singer!

I am really happy to see your Blog and how you relate this example as a lesson for Marketers!

    Keep going.
