How To Do Bulk Follow and Unfollow on Twitter?

by Ket-Sang Tai

If you are trying to build up your Twitter account for marketing purposes (I don’t mean spamming), then you want to have a way to bulk unfollow people who are not following you or not active on twitter. This is because twitter puts a limit on your following/followed ratio. You don’t want to follow too many people who are not listening to you or not using Twitter actively.

At the time of writing (30/04/2009), there are about half a dozen of such websites/applications out there. There might be more in the future as Twitter applications are expanding everyday.

1. Twitter Karma
I think this is the first of the lots and I have been using it extensively for a while. However, it does get very slow and sometimes it doesn’t work once I have got pass the 5000 followers mark. If you have less than 5000 followers, this can be a great tool for you as it shows everyone you are following but not following you as well as people who are following you but you are not following them. It shows their pictures as well. You can check the tick boxes and do bulk unfollow or follow.

2. Huitter Mutuality
This website unfollows everyone who is not following you and you can not pick and choose. You can only use this 3 times if you have more than 1800 followers.

3. TwitIn
I am using this now because Twitter Karma doesn’t work for me anymore. With this website, you can choose who to follow or unfollow. However, you can only do bulk follow or unfollow 25 people at a time. Therefore it can take a while if you are dealing with big number.

4. FlashTweet
Beside the usual follow and unfollow people in your account, this website has a special feature which is not found elsewhere. It lets you bulk follow someone else’s followers. Having said that, I have difficultly getting it to work on my account.

5. Untweeps
This is great. It shows people you are following which are inactive for more than 30, 60 or 90 days. You can then choose who you want to unfollow.

These are the sites I know so far. If you know anymore, please let me know and I will update this article.

I found a better tool recently for this purpose. It is called Refollow. Much better interface and functionality.

  • Some programs still have the option to Mass Unfollow but they don't don't have a Select All option so if you want to unfollow 5,000 people that means you need to check a box 5,000 times – not good!

I found a workaround that allows you to mass unfollow in minutes:

Hoping people find this useful because Twitter is being abused by everyone and unfollowing spammers is very righteous.

Which one is the best? I'm following 2,001 people and I'd just like to start all over on Twitter basically…
