5 Components of Google Adwords Marketing

by Ket-Sang Tai

Google Adwords is the best form of direct marketing on earth. You can have your advertisement up and running in less than 10 minutes and the whole world can see your advertisement straight away. I can’t even think of any other forms of marketing which lets you do that. Furthermore, you can start and stop anytime with a click of a button. Tracking, calculating ROI and budgeting are also extremely easy with Google Adwords.

Google Adwords is simple but not easy. If you don’t want to spend the time to learn it, you can get some Google Adwords Professionals to manage your advertising campaign for you. However, if you want to do it yourself, make sure you spend enough time and effort to learn it properly. One resource I highly recommend is Perry Marshall’s ebook.

For beginners who are confused and fail to see the whole picture of Google Adwords marketing, let me break it down into 5 simple components for you.

1. Target Market

Before you start advertising on Google Adwords, you need to know who is your target market.  You need to be very specific in term of age group, location, language and social characteristic. If you target the wrong people, you advertising campaign will fail.

2. Keywords & Bid

Keywords are what people type into the Google search box. It doesn’t matter if you are doing search marketing or  search engine optimisation for natural listing, keyword is the key. The keywords people type into the search box will trigger your advertisement. So you have to make sure you choose keywords which match your website or products. Apart from that, the more money you bid, the higher your advertisement will appear on Google page. You also have to be creative in choosing your keywords because common keywords are often used a lot and hence are too expensive to bid on.

3. Ad Copy

This is what people see after your advertisement is triggered by a search. For Google Adwords, it is in the form of  4 lines. First line is limited to 25 characters and that is your ad title. The 2nd and 3rd lines are description of your product or website and each line is limited to 35 characters. The last line is your website address. Obviously your ad copy has to be attractive enough so that people want to click on it, but at the same time it has to be specific enough so that you get targetted people to click on it. Every click costs you money so make sure your ad copy only attracts people who are really looking for what you are offering.

4. Landing Page or Website

This is strictly speaking not part of Google Adwords, but it is important part of your marketing campaign. As I said earlier, every click costs you money. Therefore you don’t want people to click, go to your website and then leave right away. Your website has to provide the information people are looking for and be able to convert visitors to sales or leads.

5. Tracking

The last but not least is tracking. Good tracking allows you to identify the weakest link in the marketing and sale process. For example, if your advertisement is not being seen, that means you need to look into your keywords and bid. If your advertisement shows up a lot but no one click on it, than you need to revise your ad copy. If you get a lot of clicks but no sale, your website is not doing the work. You can even track every single page on your website.

Understanding these 5 components is essential in successful Google Adwords marketing. I  hope this article gives you a little insight and the whole picture of Google Adwords marketing.
